Former Arsenal star set for Premier League return?

Ljungberg is no stranger to the Premier League. He spent 10 years in total on English soil – 9 with Arsenal and a single season with West Ham. When he left the Hammers in 2008, he crossed the Atlantic and ended up playing in the MLS for the Seattle Sounders. Since then he has moved on to play for the Chicago Fire, with whom he has a contract that is due to end this January.

With his time in the States drawing to a close, it appears that there’s real potential for a move back to the Premier League. He told Sky Sports News that “there are lots of clubs that are interested in different leagues from across Europe and in England.”

Some may be wary of Ljungberg rejoining the Premier League. His year with West Ham was marred by injury and he just couldn’t seem to muster the pace required to make it in this League. Why should things be any different a couple of seasons in the future?

In 2008, Ljungberg underwent surgery to repair the hip problem that had been plaguing him in the latter stages of his career. Ljungberg was expected to miss 10-12 weeks but recovered much quicker than the surgeons were expecting.

Since then he has put in a number of Man of the Match performances and was even selected for the MLS All-Stars team in 2009. He joined Chicago Fire on July 30, 2010 and managed to impress in his 15 league appearances.

Whether Freddie Ljungberg has what it takes to make it in the Premier League remains to be seen. I think his experience and passion could come in handy for teams towards the bottom of the table. But would Freddie be willing to join a team that was scrapping for its Premier League survival?

What’s your take? Do you see Ljungberg making a return to the Premier League?
